Football is Back!!

We're just excited that Spring Practice is in full swing and the guys are back on the field. Early returns from the first scrimmage are surprisingly positive. Ryan Williams first scrimmage was a HUGE success...as good as scrimmages can go, but nonetheless we're excited. This would be a big time shot-in-the-arm and the "homerun" threat we haven't seen at running back since KJ was around.

Ah yes, the "hitch" in Tyrod's throwing motion is gone. Funny, Tyrod actually went home after the bowl game and basically fixed the problem himself in a little over one week. What a leader this guy is and good thing because it probably would've taken O'Cain 2 more years to "fix" it.

And of course, the offensive line. Ok, for the record this is the third year in a row that we've heard the offensive line is "gelling". We know how much "gelling" they did the past 2 years. It sounds like these fellas went home and watched tape of themselves as well (like Tyrod) and are also self-teaching themselves good fundamental techniques and footwork. We know how effective this type of developmental "coaching" has been from Newsome and Stinespring.

The hype for 2009 continues to build. Stinespring better deliver this year because the player "experience" and "talent" excuses have officially left the building.

Dude seriously...I'm not saying Stiney is God's gift to football but get over it man! You allow your hate of the VT offensive coaches to cloud every word you write. I have argued agaisnt Stiney in the past as well and he does do things sometimes that make me scratch my head, but get over it. Beamer will not replace Stiney so either get behind him and support the team or can it. No one wants to read your sarcastic opinion about everything related to the VT offense. Go find some orange and blue gear and hate with the rest of them. I supported you when you called out Beamer on HH but I have come to realize that not everything is Stiney's fault. This year he will have no excuse for poor performance. The OL should be somewhat better and Newsome is a GOOD coach, you have nothing legitimate to base any bad comments against him on, he has been playing with the players he inherited thus far, most of whom are just not top notch OLmen. This could be a very special year, how sad for you when its all said and done that you are a Hokie fan but will not be able to celebrate because the team proved you wrong and played well on BOTH sides of the ball. Enjoy being a VT fan and stop being so overcritical of the team. You had many fans when you spoke out against Stiney last year but since then you have become overly negative across the board and no one wants to listen anymore. Lighten up, there is good reason for excitement in Blacksburg this year, we might not win the NC but how about dropping the hatred and enjoying the ride. Think about it.....

I still want to listen to Jason from Arlington and you misconstrue his "hatred" for frustration at the sickening inability of the offensive coaches to carry the water for that side of the ball.

Every analyst and fan knows that the Hokies are about defense and they are a "neat" program to watch and they have the lunch pail and aww aren't they endearing. Ok now put away your plastic spoons and let the adults eat dinner in the national title discussion while you kids go play with one arm tied behind your back.

I am sick of that. I want (and have wanted) the offense held accountable under Coach Stinespring for going on 5 years now. In other words, this bandwagon is LONG overdue and thanks to Jason from Arlington for helping give it some momentum because I can jump on and maybe if enough people do, we can bring about change.

I am proud that the Hokies won the Orange Bowl last year. But to have such a consistently bad offense for so long has kept the Hokies from competing among the top programs in the country.

I think we can all, as true Hokie fans, HOPE that this year is different on offense (because oh what a year it could be if things are) while keeping an objective eye on events to see if things really do get better.

MJ,

I feel ya man, I truly do...I too have grown weary of the tired excuses from Beamer about this offense. Last year about mid season I was on the band wagon to ride Stiney right out of town. Like I said I will be the first to agree he is not the best OC, but after stepping back and analyzing what the offense did accomplish given the injuries and inexperience I am now of the
opinion that it wasn't as bad as it looked sometimes.

Let me say this, with the tools we have in place this year Stiney has NO EXCUSE for producing an offense ranked any less than 80th in the nation in total offense. IMO they could be as good as 50th or so...but Beamers style will never produce an offense ranked much better than that simply by its conservative, ball control nature. If we are tops in the nation in sacks allowed, and flirting with the 100's in total offense I will be convinced that he is once and for all completely inept at being an OC.

I think the point of my post is that Jason's "frustration" (while understandable) has grown to a point where he is overly negative about too many aspects of our team. Its really a drag to read when you know his commentary will always have a negative spin.

Hopefully the offense will be so darn good this year that none of us will have much negative to say, but in the meantime its my opinion that Jason would really increase his credibility by not always being such a downer on the the offense. Its the truth, right or wrong, people grow tired or reading your stuff when you just see the glass half empty all the time.

J in A...I feel your frustration
But it aint all bad, all the time

Here's to an improved offense in 09!

Go Hokies!

I agree with what Jason in Chesapeake is saying about Coach Curt Newsome. He inherited this mess from the old OL coach (Stiney) so I do not blame him for trying to get the most out of the players he inherited! Jason from Arlington, do you really think it Newsome would be able to turn our OL around in a yr or two? I have heard Newsome thought that some of VT's OL (some starters and backups) wouldn't have even been able to start for Newsome when he coached at JMU! Is that sad/pathetic or what? VT has recruited more busts at OL over the last 6-7 yrs than any other position on offense or defense. I think Newsome is a great coach and a great recruiter and brings a lot to the VT coaching staff. He is definitely an asset to our program. He will turn our OL around this yr and make it a strength going forward in the yrs to come! Oh, but I agree with everyone that this is finally the yr that Stiney has run out of any excuses. This will be the most experienced and deepest VT offense Stiney has had to work with when you factor in every poisition and the talent we have. The only excuse I could see is if Stiney calls too many planned QB draws and TT gets injured (gasp). Stiney could use that as an excuse, but with the rb and wr talent we have now TT should be getting the ball out to those playmakers early on swings and screens...
